Hotel Gajoen Tokyo, a museum hotel of Japanese beauty, is holding “Japanese Light x Hyakudan Staircase 2024 – Yokubi Naotogibari” from 5 July (Friday) to 23 September (Monday, holiday) 2024.
The tale begins with the discovery of an ancient scroll from the fictional travelling pavilion of Garo. Mysterious stories written on the scrolls, such as Taketori Monogatari, The Legend of Kuzunoha and Tennyo no Hagoromo (The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter), are displayed in seven rooms. As you experience the stories with your senses and listen to the original music composed especially for this exhibition, you will feel as if you are in the stories.
The story is created by more than 40 creators. Enjoy a unique spatial exhibition created through the collaboration of different techniques and sensibilities in a heritage site, including a kiri-e carved carp swimming lightly across the ceiling, a dynamic water flow expressed through ikebana, and an ink painting of a dragon dancing powerfully and gracefully against the current.
A variety of works from all over Japan are on display, including Kutani ware from Ishikawa Prefecture, Kiriko Akari from Okayama Prefecture, bamboo lanterns from Miyazaki Prefecture and folk crafts that add colour to festivals in Yamaguchi Prefecture. Visitors can enjoy up-close views of a wide range of old and new art, from traditional crafts that preserve the atmosphere and good old beauty of the past, to works by young artists who sublimate traditional techniques with a modern twist, and works born out of sustainable initiatives.
