The ‘Night Hydrangea Train’, a Hakone tradition of reserved-seat trains, will be in operation.

2024.05.22

The hydrangeas along the Hakone Tozan Railway are usually at their best from mid-June, and the train is known as the ‘Hakone Hydrangea Train’. The Yoru no Ajisai-go (Night Hydrangea Train), which operates temporarily during this period, is a sightseeing train that allows passengers to enjoy the hydrangeas in a more relaxed manner by slowing down and stopping at the highlights of the hydrangeas.

About the hydrangea train

The Hakone Tozan Railway has a difference in altitude of more than 400 metres from Hakone-Yumoto Station to Gora Station, and the best time to view the hydrangeas changes with this difference in altitude, making for a long viewing period. Hydrangeas are most famous in June during the rainy season, but due to the high altitude of Hakone, they are also at their best in July.

At this time of year, the mountain railway is nicknamed the ‘Hakone Hydrangea Train’ as it passes through the blooming hydrangeas, which you can almost touch from the train windows, and the hydrangeas are lit up at night every year.
