[Hakone Garden] The cherry blossoms that bloom magnificently on the shores of Lake Ashi, about 100 years old

2020.04.22

The symbol of Hakone Garden, “One Cherry Blossom by the Lake” will be in full bloom in mid April this year. This lakeside single cherry tree (Oshima cherry tree), which can be said to be a landmark of Hakone Garden, is a 100-year-old tree with a branch of about 22 m, a trunk of about 5 m, a height of about 12 m, and a circumference of about 70 m. The shape of Mt. Fuji attracts many people every year.
About one month later than in central Tokyo, it is about to bloom, and due to the warm winter, it begins to bloom from around April 8 (Wednesday) this year, and it is in full bloom from April 15 (Wednesday) to 20 (Monday), It seems that you can enjoy until before Golden Week

Mt. Fuji shaped Oshima cherry tree

The secret story of Oshima cherry blossoms The founder who tried to set up a campsite on the shore of Lake Ashi in Hakone, where you can see Mt. I thought to entertain the eyes of tourists visiting Hakone in the spring. We chose Oshima Sakura, which is often found in the Izu Peninsula, where it has a long life.
I calculated that five saplings would be planted together in order to quickly grow into a large cherry tree, and if they were cultivated smoothly, they would grow five times faster.
We selected five strong seedlings from about ten seedlings and planted them on a good autumn day.
Although Oshima Sakura was a slow growing tree, this revolutionary tree planting method made it a popular large tree in the shape of Mt. Fuji after 10 years and became popular among tourists.
