[BEB5 Tsuchiura] “Survival Survacycle,” a 120km cycling challenge in midwinter in search of mackerel, will be held again this year.

2022.10.11

Hoshino Resort BEB5 Tsuchiura, the first hotel in Hoshino Resort where guests can enjoy bicycles, will hold “Survival Sabasicle,” a 120 km cycling challenge in midwinter in search of mackerel, from December 1, 2022 to February 28, 2023. Ibaraki Prefecture has the largest mackerel catch in Japan. (*1) Riding a “Survacycle,” a bicycle specially designed for mackerel fishing, cyclists will cycle a 12-hour, 120-km round trip course from BEB5 Tsuchiura to Kashima Port via the Kasumigaura lakeside in winter, and then fish for mackerel, which are in season in winter in the waters around Ibaraki Prefecture. This is a challenging experience unique to Ibaraki.

Sabaicycle, a specialized bicycle for mackerel fishing, evolves

You will ride on a “Sabaicycle,” a bicycle specially designed for mackerel fishing. This bicycle is a combination of a bicycle, a cooler box, and a rod holder for holding fishing rods. The speed is only about 10 km/h, about the speed at which mackerel swim. This year, the electric assist has been eliminated and the bicycle is pedaled entirely under its own power, which gives it a more survivalist feel. In addition to the Saba helmet, Saba decorations have been added to the body, wheel covers, and lights to make the riders feel like they are part of a herd of Saba. You can drive more like a Saba.

12 hours round trip, 120km survival cycling course

A 12-hour, 120-km round-trip survival cycling challenge! The course takes you through the extremely cold Kasumigaura lakeside and the maze-like Kashima Industrial Zone in Kashima City, Ibaraki Prefecture, to the Port of Kashima, which faces the Pacific Ocean. Especially in winter, the lakeside of Kasumigaura is a tough cycling course where even cyclists hesitate to go because of the strong and cold wind blowing from Mt.

Saba Sushi is a nutritional supplement while cycling!

We prepare mackerel sushi to nourish you while cycling. It is a long and daunting road, but eating mackerel, which is full of nutrients, will help you make the 120 km round trip.

Opportunities are limited. Only 3 sets per person!

Only 3 sets of traps used for mackerel fishing will be given per person. Try your hand at mackerel fishing using “Sabiki Fishing” in Kashima Port! Since only 3 sets of Sabiki fishing traps are provided, you must not make mistakes such as tangling or breaking the line while preparing or swinging the fishing rod. If you successfully catch a mackerel in the limited chances you have, you can load it on the Sabicicle and take it home to eat it grilled with salt or fried with Tatsuta at “Sasaya,” a tavern loved by the locals. *3 Cooking fee 600 yen~, one dish and one drink per person must be ordered separately.
