2021.12.21

“Adventure tourism” has been attracting a lot of attention worldwide as a new form of tourism these days. At Kyoto Arashiyama, we are sending out an unprecedented way to enjoy cycling on a tandem bicycle.

What is "Adventure Tourism"?

Did you know that the word “adventure tourism” is gaining a lot of attention in the world as we enter the era of with corona and tourism requires a form of travel that avoids crowding.

Adventure tourism is a “travel consisting of two or more of the three elements of activity, nature and cultural experience” defined by the “Adventure Travel Trade Association”, an international agency for adventure tourism. It is a form of travel that aims to enable travelers to experience the unique nature and natural culture of the region together with the local people, and to realize their own self-transformation and growth.

Three elements of activity, nature and cultural experience

1. Activity
Tandem bicycles are familiar to many people, but with the addition of saddles and pedals, they are specialized for two-seaters. Therefore, it is a new sensation that two people need to move together. You can enjoy new fun like attractions in theme parks in the city.
In addition, the sight of going on a journey that has not yet been seen while sometimes talking back and forth and adjusting the direction and speed is truly an adult adventure.

2. Nature
If you use a bicycle with a wide range of activities, you can easily visit spots rich in nature that were difficult to reach on foot. In addition, by relaxing on a tandem bicycle through the land of Arashiyama surrounded by nature, the line of sight focuses on the magnificent nature.

The emotional scenery that gradually changes with the speed of pedaling spreads in front of you. You can enjoy famous places such as the natural beauty “Takebayashi no Komichi” that flutters in the wind on a comfortable trip.

3. Cultural experience
Beyond the “activity” and “nature” of adventure tourism, there are many historical buildings that represent Kyoto, and the culture rooted in this area is waiting for you.

There are two types of “Tandem trip”, “World Heritage Tour” such as Tenryu-ji Temple and “Power Spot Tour” such as Suzumushi Temple, which customers who use tandem bicycles can select according to their preference. We have prepared the route.
In each case, you can feel the culture just by looking at the buildings that convey the history of Kyoto to the present. By visiting the site, you will be able to experience further culture, including interaction with people who continue to protect the culture of each region.
