From March 20, 2024 (Wed., national holiday) to April 7, 2024 (Sun.), the nun-monzeki temple Reikanji in Kyoto will hold a special spring open house.
More than 100 varieties of camellias are planted in the large garden, including the Nikko camellia (designated as a natural treasure by the city of Kyoto), the scattered camellia, the white peony camellia, and the Maizuru camellia, all of which will be in full bloom in a variety of colors.
Known as the “Temple of Camellia,” Reikanji Temple was founded in 1654 by Tarinomiya, the daughter of Emperor Gomizunoo, and is a nun monastery where successive imperial princesses served as chief priests. Also known as “Gosho of the Valley,” the temple still retains its prestigious and elegant appearance.
There are more than 100 varieties of camellias that can be seen in the garden, including the Nikko camellia (designated as a natural treasure by the city of Kyoto), scattered camellia, white peony camellia, and Maizuru camellia. Each type of camellia blooms at a different time of year, so you can enjoy a different view depending on the time of year you visit.
