Located approximately 45 minutes’ drive from Fukuoka city centre, on Shikashima Island—a land-connected island linked to the mainland by the Uminonakamichi causeway, which stretches between Hakata Bay and the Genkai Sea, and a sand spit known as ‘Michikiri’—Shikashima Holiday Village is holding ‘Family Support Days’ from 1 July to 17 July. This period fully encompasses the ‘Hakata Gion Yamakasa’ festival, which takes place from 1 July to 15 July, and during this time, children’s accommodation is free of charge.
Hakata Gion Yamakasa
The ‘Hakata Gion Yamakasa’ is a Shinto ritual said to have begun in 1241, held annually from 1 to 15 July, during which a portable shrine known as a ‘yamakasa’ is dedicated to Kushida Shrine, renowned as the guardian shrine of Hakata. The Gion Yamakasa festivities are organised by neighbourhood groups known as ‘nagare’.
The ‘nagare’ are said to have originated from Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s ‘Taikō Machiwari’ (town planning) in Tenshō 15 (1587), and referred to a single district comprising a dozen or so neighbourhoods. This tradition has been passed down to the current ‘Seven Nagare’ (Daikoku-nagare, Higashi-nagare, Nakasu-nagare, Nishi-nagare, Chiyo-nagare, Ebisu-nagare and Doi-nagare).
