What is waterside washing?
“Waterside Senshin” is a wellness program of 2 nights and 3 days that trains the respiratory function, which is especially important during the With Corona era, and at the same time boosts immunity.
Arashiyama, where Hoshinoya Kyoto is located, once prospered as a villa for the Heian Aristocracy. All 25 guest rooms designed around the garden face the Oigawa River, and you can feel the transition of nature in the four seasons. While staying in the scenic Hoshinoya Kyoto, you can experience acupuncture and moxibustion based on the idea of oriental medicine and the traditional culture of Kyoto, and you can improve your immunity while adjusting your mind and body.
Boost immunity with oriental medicine
At Hoshinoya Kyoto, we perform treatments based on the ideas of oriental medicine. The practitioner will ask you a question in the guest room, set up moxibustion, and then prepare your body with grassroots bark hot water and tea. Hot water and tea are prepared according to each person’s physical condition based on the results of the interview, and are prescriptions that regulate the respiratory function, which is important for improving immunity.
In addition, the practitioner will give a lecture on how to set up moxibustion, how to take a bath, and when to drink tea so that you can stay healthy even after returning home.
Boost your immunity with a traditional cultural experience in Kyoto
1. “Laughter Workshop” at “Sengoro Shigeyama”, a Kyogen master in Kyoto
The 14th head of the family, Sengoro Shigeyama
You will experience a Kyogen laughing workshop at the rehearsal hall of “Noh performer Okura style Kyogen style Sengoro Shigeyama”. The Sengoro Shigeyama family has a history of about 400 years since the early Edo period, and is currently the 14th generation Kyogen master who is active throughout the country, mainly in Kyoto. At the rehearsal hall of the Sengoro Shigeyama family, which you cannot normally enter, you will first watch the first Kyogen performance and experience the workshop.
At the workshop, we will practice the type of “laughter” that shows the laughing of a god or daimyo, following the basic posture and vocalizations called “Kamae” by Kyogen masters. Laughter is a type of laughter that lowers the center of gravity of the body and makes a loud voice from the bottom of the abdomen. Taking a deep breath and laughing with your entire body strengthens your respiratory function and muscles and boosts your immunity.
2. “Making scents” at the long-established incense store “Yamada Matsukagi store” in Kyoto
At the long-established incense store “Yamada Matsukagi store” in Kyoto, you will experience making scents. Many of the natural fragrances used as raw materials for incense are used in Chinese medicine as a medicinal type, and this program prepares incense raw materials that suit each individual’s constitution. By blending incense ingredients to your liking and filling them in Nishijin-ori sachets to create scented incense, you can adjust your heart with the scent while experiencing the culture of Kyoto.
Experience your morning work at a Zen temple. Correct your posture, meditation, and chant the sutra with Osho. You can start your day comfortably by taking in the clear air of the early morning and uttering in a loud voice. After that, listen to the law while drinking matcha made by Osho. Working in the morning not only adjusts your posture and breathing, but also adjusts your mind.
Boost your immunity in the scenic Hoshinoya Kyoto
Hoshinoya Kyoto is surrounded by Arashiyama and Ogurayama and is located away from the hustle and bustle of the city. By staying in a quiet inn where you can hear the murmuring of the river and the sound of the wind while feeling the changes of the four seasons, you can reset your mind away from everyday life.
1. “Early Morning Power Walk” on the banks of the Oigawa River
Power walk is one of the health methods to walk fast by stepping firmly on the ground with the sole of your foot while being aware of deep breathing and trunk. In this program, you will sweat and refresh yourself by walking along the river promenade under the blue maple lit by the morning sun. There will be a lecture in advance from the practitioner on how to do the power walk. Sensitivity is stimulated by focusing on the sounds of nature that are rarely touched, such as the chirping of birds and the murmuring of rivers.
Also, in Oriental medicine, the place where water flows is a suitable place to let out evil spirits. By breathing in the fresh air at the riverside and letting it go around your body, your body and mind will be relaxed.
2. “Deep breathing by the water” that stretches out the limbs under a 400-year-old maple
Stretching with an emphasis on breathing is performed at Hoshinoya Kyoto’s “Oku no Niwa” where the Asahi shines. The garden in the back is a garden with a dry landscape garden that resembles smoked roof tiles and white stones as sand crests. From the garden, you can enjoy the view of the Oigawa River and the valley of Arashiyama, and a 400-year-old maple spreads overhead, creating a soft shadow. You can adjust your mind and body by stretching your limbs and taking a deep breath while meditating.
3. Get the vitality of the day with a morning pot full of vegetables
Breakfast is a hot pot with plenty of seasonal vegetables. For breakfast on the second day, we will serve a hot pot limited to this program, which uses plenty of ginger and koji that are good for nutrition and tonicity.
Instead of mirin, we add chicken balls with ginger to the soup stock sweetened with jiuqu, and add chopped ginger as a condiment. We aim to improve immunity by warming the body from the inside with ginger and adjusting the intestinal environment with the dietary fiber of fermented foods such as jiuqu and vegetables.
In addition, grilled fish and ankake tofu are included, and you can get the vitality of the day with a well-balanced breakfast.
