Ikebukuro Sunshine Aquarium Christmas

A diver dressed as Santa appears in the “Sunshine Lagoon”, a large tank of about 240 tons of water. Divers bring Christmas presents to the fish that live in the aquarium. At the end of the performance, Santa and the fish work together to create a large Christmas tree in the aquarium.

Flying Penguin Tree & Marine Garden Illumination

After 16:00, the illumination area of the Sunshine Aquarium “Marine Garden” will light up with about 7,500 lights. About 4m in height, the “flying penguin tree” has a cape penguin as a motif and seems to swim to the sky. The penguin at the top of the tree lifts a sparkling star over the head and enlivens Christmas in the aquarium.

December 1 (Sun), 7 (Sat), 8 (Sun), 14 (Sat), 15 (Sun), 21 (Sat)-25 (Wed) from 16:00 A performance of lighting a “flying penguin tree” by sea lions will also be held.

Underwater performance time "Twilight Lagoon"

December 1 (Sun), 6 (Fri)-8 (Sun), 13 (Fri)-15 (Sun), 20 (Fri)-25 (Wed) 17:30-[Approx. In 10 minutes, a diver dressed as a mermaid wearing a large fin fin monofin performs a fantastic performance with the fish in accordance with LED lighting and music.

Otter Greeting Time-Christmas ver.

A trainer dressed as Santa will introduce you to the ecology and the way you live while watching the cute Kotsumeka otter playing with Christmas-like accessories on the performance stage of the outdoor area “Marine Garden”. (Execution time: 14:45-[about 10 minutes])

Christmas special tank

In the special aquarium at the entrance of the aquarium, you will see Christmas-like creatures that are shaped like Christmas tree ornaments with colorful body colors.

PINGU’s Christmas in Sunshine Aquarium

A collaboration project between Pingu and Sunshine Aquarium will be held again this year! We will develop Christmas-style Pingu photo spots and sell Pingu goods. In addition, we will have a Pingu greeting.

Special extended sales & special events during Christmas

From December 21st (Sat.) to 25th (Wed.), the special extension will be held until 18:00 until 18:00, and events will also be held.

ZIPANGU Contemporary artists who have run through the Heisei era” Takashi Murakami x Sueo Mizuma dialogue: ‘Beyond the Theory of Artistic Entrepreneurship’ / Interview with Mr. Mizuma: ‘Rediscovering the Value of Japanese Culture by the Japanese People

The Hiroshima Museum of Art is hosting the exhibition “ZIPANGU: Contemporary Artists Who Defined the Heisei Era” (November 2, 2024 – December 22, 2024). This showcase brings together works by some of the most prominent figures in Japan’s contemporary art scene, including Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, Makoto Aida, Yoshitomo Nara, Chiharu Shiota, Izumi Kato, Akira Yamaguchi, and Miwa Komatsu. The exhibition has already garnered significant attention, exceeding 10,000 visitors.

HYAKKEI covered the dialogue between contemporary artist Takashi Murakami and Sueo Mizuma, the curator of this exhibition, held at the RIHGA Royal Hotel Hiroshima. We also conducted an exclusive interview with Mr. Mizuma.

The discussions centered on the aspirations behind the ZIPANGU exhibition and offered forward-looking insights, not only into Japan’s art world but also into the rediscovery of value within Japanese culture by its people.

Two types of autumn-only red seals, ‘Chrysanthemum and Tanzaku’ and ‘Autumn Leaves and Candles’, are now available at Daisho-in Temple, Miyajima, a World Heritage island.

Two types of paper seals made exclusively for autumn, ‘Chrysanthemum and Tanzaku’ and ‘Autumn Leaves and Candles’, have been available since Monday 9 September at Daisho-in Temple on the World Heritage island of Miyajima. Quantities are limited and will run out as soon as they are gone.
