The precious flower “Higotai” that is endangered is in full bloom until late August!

2020.08.29

At the Rokko Takayama Botanical Garden, which is operated by Mt. Rokko on the top of Mt. Rokko, the endangered species “Higotai” has blossomed.

“Higotai” is a member of thistle, and is characterized by vivid blue and Temari-shaped flowers. The buds are also lovely at the time of the day, and the refreshing breeze makes them look cool and makes us forget about the summer heat. The unusually shaped bright blue flowers attract the attention of visitors.

■ Higotai (Asteraceae)
It is a perennial plant with a height of about 1 m that grows in a rather dry grassland. It used to be a flower that was once seen, but now the number is decreasing due to the development of grassland and the decrease of grassland where it grows. It is rarely seen in Kyushu, rarely seen in Honshu, and is classified as Endangered II (VU) in the Ministry of the Environment’s Red Data Book. Each thorn-like thing is a small flower, and many flowers gather together to form one sphere. The “Higotai” blooming in the park is in full bloom now, and we expect to enjoy it until late August.
