A summer tradition in Tokyo. “Marunouchi de Uchimizu” and “Tokyo Marunouchi Bon Odori” to be held for the first time in two years!

2022.07.21

The Otemachi-Marunouchi-Yurakucho Summer Festival 2022, an annual summer event in the Otemachi, Marunouchi, and Yurakucho district, will be held on Friday, July 29, 2022.
This event will provide an opportunity for businesses, workers, and visitors in the area to experience the Japanese summer culture and coolness of summer. The event aims to provide an opportunity for businesses, workers, and visitors in the area to experience the Japanese “summer Japanese culture” and “coolness” and to become a “place of connection” where participants can share a common awareness of environmental protection.

"Marunouchi de Uchimizu"

In this year’s “Marunouchi de Uchimizu,” a summer tradition now in its 17th year, participants will sprinkle water together with workers and visitors to the city. The water used is gray water discharged from buildings in the event area, providing an opportunity for participants to become more environmentally conscious.

This year, the number of participants will be limited to a maximum of 50 people at a time, and the water will be sprinkled while maintaining a distance of approximately 2 meters between participants, allowing visitors to enjoy the traditional Japanese coolness of the water.

Date: July 29th (Fri) 17:00-19:00
*Canceled in case of rain
Venue: Gyoko-dori (Imperial Palace side)

"Tokyo Marunouchi Bon Odori"

A 5-meter-high “Matsuri Yagura” (festival tower) will appear on Gyoko-dori Avenue for one day only, and visitors will be able to join the Bon dance while enjoying a view of the illuminated Marunouchi Station Building of Tokyo Station. Popular restaurants and food stalls from the Daimaru area will also be present, offering shaved ice, cotton candy, and other treats.
This year, DJs will also be on hand to enliven the event with a variety of old and new tunes, from Japanese “city pop,” which is gaining momentum worldwide, to performances of familiar summer songs.

Date: July 29th (Fri) 17:30-20:00
*Abort when it rains

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
