Private old private house “Satoyama Jujo THE HOUSE” will open in Minami Uonuma

2021.07.16

We have fully renovated the precious old folk house that remains in the Niigata / Uonuma area, and completed a space where you can spend a relaxing time in private. The first one to open is “IZUMI”, which stands in a terraced rice field called Senjoji Temple in Minami Uonuma City. Enjoy a private space in a quiet place.

The concept is to comfortably experience life and nature in a snowy country.

Think of the rich forest 150 years ago
A 150-year-old folk house has been fully renovated. Fine beams and pillars that have withstood heavy snowfall. The pillars and lintels that surround the hearth called “Oe” are zelkova, which is a valuable building in this area.

An old folk house built by cutting out giant zelkova trees, which are now preserved trees and forests, letting them lie for decades, drying them, and then sawing them. How rich the mountains were before the start of sugi planting. And I would like you to think about the old life where a large family gathered in the hearth.

See the reason why Japan’s most delicious rice is produced
The Nishiyama area is said to produce the most delicious rice in Minami Uonuma. Above all, the place where “IZUMI” is built overlooks the special Kabanozawa district in Nishiyama. And the temperature difference between day and night, abundant water, terrain, and soil. You can check all of them from “IZUMI”. Of particular importance is the temperature difference between day and night, and this temperature difference and the basin topography produce a “sea of clouds.”

An old folk house that is not cold at all even in winter
Renovated as a comfortable house even in modern times, with the layout of an old folk house almost unchanged. Like Satoyama Jujo, we have fundamentally repaired the skeleton as well as the foundation so that it can be used for more than 100 years.

Guest room

Maximum number of guests is 7. There are 4 mattresses on the 1st floor and a bed on the 2nd floor of “Ishidaya” (Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture), which is famous for bedding made of natural materials. It can accommodate up to 8 people, but since there are 7 chairs at the dining counter, it is limited to 7 people. Cooking is also possible in the new kitchen where “Okudo-san” was. There is a single-plate counter table in the atrium space, which is a dismantled upper silk moth room.

Morning and supper

There are three options for dinner. The first is a dinner at “Sanae” in Satoyama Jujo, which won one star in “Michelin Guide Niigata 2020”. The second is to the store that won the Bib Gourmand and Michelin Plate at the “Michelin Guide Niigata 2020” scattered around the area. The third is to cook by yourself. Those who wish to have dinner at Satoyama Jujo will be picked up.

If you would like to shop in the area, the concierge will take care of the reservation, so please feel free to tell us.

Hot spring

We have prepared an open-air bath with a spectacular view of the mountains on the Joetsu border, such as Mt. Makihata, one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains, and Mt. Hakkai, a sacred mountain. We also have an indoor bath that is compact but offers a magnificent view from a small window. At night, you can soak in the hot springs while gazing at the starry sky.

Satoyama Jujo THE HOUSE IZUMI

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
