[Hoshinoya Kyoto] Quiet winter in Oku-Arashiyama, a special stay at Hoshinoya Kyoto.

2022.10.05

“Hoshinoya” offers overwhelmingly extraordinary experiences at each facility with creative themes. The “Mountain Sleeping Winter Stay”, which proposes a relaxing stay in Arashiyama in winter with clear air, will be held from December 15, 2022 to March 10, 2023.

Making incense paste to mix your own unique fragrance

The Heian aristocrats used to indulge in fragrances during the relaxing winter season by combining fragrances. At the beginning of your stay in Kyoto, you can follow the culture of the Heian aristocrats by mixing your own favorite ingredients for winter fragrance. Powdered fragrant wood and natural fragrant ingredients are mixed and kneaded together with honey and plum paste.

Enjoy a cup of tea on the elegant "Jade" houseboat, which is available for private charter.

The next morning, you will rent the elegant yakatabune “Jade” on the Oigawa River, which flows right in front of Hoshinoya Kyoto, and enjoy tea and seasonal sweets prepared by the staff while burning incense mixed by yourself.

The Jade Boat, surrounded by windows on all sides, allows guests to enjoy a quiet cup of tea while admiring the winter scenery of the valley, which resembles an ink painting. This is a time to relax and enjoy time as the aristocrats of the Heian period did when they enjoyed boating and admiring the seasonal scenery of the valley.

Special breakfast of white miso hot pot served with a view of the valley

For breakfast, we will prepare a special breakfast of winter vegetables and chicken balls in a white miso broth. Shiro-miso, an essential ingredient for winter in Kyoto, has a mild, sweet taste that will warm you up on a chilly morning. We have also prepared teriyaki yellowtail with fatty fish and dashimaki tamago (rolled egg) with yuba bean paste. Enjoy them in the comfort of your guest room while gazing at the dignified winter scenery of the valley.

Special dinner of suppon hot pot to warm your body from the core in the chilly Kyoto winter

For dinner, we will enjoy a suppon nabe, which is rich in nutrients and warms the body from the core. In addition to suppon, vegetables that store sweetness in winter such as kujo leek, turnip, and kintoki carrot, and ginger are prepared. To finish off the meal, guests will enjoy zosui (rice porridge) in a soup stock filled with the umami of the ingredients.
Kue, a typical winter food, is served as mukozuke, gindara is grilled in Saikyo style, and crab is served as chawanmushi (steamed egg custard). In the chilly Kyoto winter, you can spend a quiet and relaxing time in your guest room illuminated by the light of the Japanese lanterns while enjoying the warmth of the dinner.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
