Traditional doll festivals from the Edo era are being held in Oita!

2020.02.09

Kyushu and Oita prefectures rank first in Japan in terms of both the amount of springs and the number of springs, as the name of Osen in Onsen prefecture is the best in Japan. Many tourists visit each year for famous hot springs such as Beppu and Yufuin, but their attractions are not limited to hot springs.

Speaking of spring traditions, the Hina Matsuri is held in various places. Hina dolls brought by the Tokugawa family and daimyo princesses during the Edo period are particularly important in Oita prefecture, and you can see many unique dolls in various parts of Oita prefecture from February to March.

Birthplace of Hina Festival in Kyushu Tenryo Hita Hina Festival

Hita is a territory that prospered during the Edo period. Many luxurious dolls that Australian merchants at the time purchased in Kyoto and Osaka are still available today. A representative example is the Hinamori decoration of the Hirose Museum for the Tenpo years. It is open all year and is the highlight of the hina tour course. Hina dolls that have made such luxuries are rare throughout Japan.

The center of the hina tour is in the area of Mameda-cho and Kuma-cho. In particular, Mameda-cho, which was the center of culture and economy, can enjoy the hina tour while feeling the atmosphere of the old town. In addition, during the event, related events such as “Nagashinabina” and “Okiage Hina Exhibition” will be held, so it is full of highlights.
