[Hoshino Resort KAI] Onsen stay plan with special prayer at Nikko Toshogu Shrine starting in December

2022.11.14

Hoshino Resort’s onsen ryokan “Kai Kawaji,” “Kai Kinugawa,” and “Kai Nikko” in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, will offer a hot spring stay plan from December 1, 2022 to February 28, 2023 that includes a special prayer at Nikko Toshogu, a shrine dedicated to the first shogun of the Edo shogunate, Prince Ieyasu Tokugawa.

Special prayer at Nikko Toshogu Shrine

Nikko Toshogu Shrine, including Nikko-zan Rinnoji Temple and Nikko Futaarasan Shrine, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1999. In this plan, you will receive a special prayer service only for guests at the prayer hall, and receive a souvenir and the kai’s original Goshuin (red seal) to energize you for tomorrow.

KAI's original "Naorai Sweets"

“Naorai” is an event to receive the sake and the offering to the gods after a Shinto ritual, and it is also a ceremony to return to the normal way of life.
In this plan, as part of the “Naorai” ceremony after praying at Nikko Toshogu Shrine, we will offer the “Naorai Sweets,” an original sweet created in collaboration with Nisshodo, a Japanese confectionery store that serves the Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Visitors can spend a moment after prayers in a private space that is currently not open to the general public.

Purify yourself with a stay at an onsen ryokan

(1)Creation of purification goods

During your stay at each facility, you can create your own original purification goods. Goods with scents and patterns that are believed to ward off evil spirits are made, and the body and mind are purified in preparation for the next day’s prayers.

<Kai Kawaji>
At “Kai Kawaji,” a hot-spring inn in a satoyama (a village) located along a mountain stream, visitors can experience sachet making using Karasuyama washi, a traditional Tochigi Prefecture craft.

<Kai Kinugawa>
At “Kai Kinugawa,” a hot spring hotel with sunlight filtering through the trees where modern Tochigi folk art comes alive, visitors can make art panels using the traditional Tochigi Prefecture craft “Kurobane Aizome.

<Kai Nikko>
At “Kai Nikko,” a hot spring resort located on the shore of Lake Chuzenji, visitors can create accessories using Kanuma-kumiko, a traditional craft of Tochigi Prefecture.

(2)Purification before prayer

In the private baths at each facility, you can purify your body before praying in a kakeburo, which is a bath filled with sake. While staying at the onsen ryokan, you can prepare your body and mind for the prayers.

Eighty Years After the War: A Reflection on the Preciousness of Ordinary Life YUKIKAZE – In Theaters Nationwide from August 15, 2025

“To Return Alive, To Bring Others Home Alive”

Opening nationwide on August 15, 2025—marking eighty years since the end of World War II—YUKIKAZE is a feature film based on the true story of the Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) destroyer Yukikaze, a vessel that rescued countless lives amid the horrors of war. A press screening was held in advance at the Sony Pictures screening room.

The destroyer Yukikaze, which served throughout the Pacific War, was renowned for rescuing numerous sailors thrown into the sea during fierce naval battles, surviving to the end of the war virtually unscathed. It earned the legendary moniker “the lucky ship.” This film brings to life the ship’s heroic journey, alongside the lives of those who persevered through one of the most turbulent eras in modern history.

Leading the cast is Yutaka Takenouchi as Captain Kazutoshi Terasawa—a fictional amalgamation inspired by the real-life captains of Yukikaze. Hiroshi Tamaki portrays Petty Officer First Class Kohei Hayase. Supporting roles are delivered by an ensemble of acclaimed actors including Daiken Okudaira, Rena Tanaka, Kanji Ishimaru, and Toru Masuoka. Kiichi Nakai delivers a commanding performance as Vice Admiral Seiichi Itō, the Second Fleet Commander of the IJN who met his fate aboard the battleship Yamato.

In today’s world, once again shaken by division and violence, YUKIKAZE poses an urgent question to those of us living in the peace that others fought to protect: Are we once again treading the path of past mistakes? As collective memory of the war fades, this film becomes ever more vital—a call to reflect on the true value of peace.
