From December 1, 2023 (Fri.), Kushiro Prince Hotel will begin offering guided tours that can only be experienced in winter, where you can enjoy the sight of red-crowned cranes right in front of you with an explanation from a professional guide.
From mid-November to mid-March every year, red-crowned cranes fly to Tsurui Village in the Kushiro Regional Promotion Bureau in search of food. During the snow season, the largest number of red-crowned cranes gather in the village, and when the number is large, about 200 cranes can be seen in their graceful and mysterious appearance. On this tour, you will be guided by a professional guide to Tsurumidai, one of several viewing spots. Please enjoy the vast nature and spectacular scenery of East Hokkaido, as well as its winter attractions.
What is a red-crowned crane?
A phantom auspicious bird once thought to be extinct. With its beautiful contrast of white, black, and red and graceful appearance, it is also called the god of the marsh. It is one of the largest wild birds in Japan, measuring 1.4 m in length and 2.4 m when its wings are spread. The top of its head is red and its entire body is covered in white plumage. The white of the red-crowned crane is whiter than snow, and its flight over the pure white snowfield is considered to be a winter wonder.
