Hoshino Resort Aomoriya will hold the spectacular snow viewing open-air “Neburi Nagashi Lantern” at the open-air bath “Ukiyu” from December 1, 2022 to April 2, 2023, which recreates the “Neburi Nagashi”, the origin of the Aomori Nebuta Festival.

The “Lantern Floating Ceremony” is said to be the origin of the Aomori Nebuta Festival, called “Neburi Nagashi” in the Tohoku region, which is an event to drive away the sleeping spirits and to discharge impurities into the river or the sea. Aomoriya recreates this event by floating small lanterns with Nebuta and wishes written by guests on them in the pond around the floating bath.

New float "Raijin" appears

This winter, the 11th year of the festival, a new float, “Raijin” will make its debut. 2012 marks the first year of this project, and since then, “Shoki”, who protects people from plague and evil spirits, and “Bishamonten”, who brings wisdom and good fortune, have appeared. This winter, the “God of Thunder,” who presides over water and thunder, will be on hand to dispel the recent disasters and evil spirits and to wish for further development.

Producer: Hiroo Takenami, Nebuta artist

Mr. Takenami is a Nebuta artist who has received the “Best Creator Award,” the highest award given to the creator of the Nebuta Festival in Aomori, and is the creator of the Nebuta used in the Neburi Nagashi lanterns. He has been involved in the development of this project from the beginning, and together with the Aomoriya staff, has been working through trial and error to find a waterproofing process to keep the lanterns on display outdoors, and a method to prevent snow and ice from accumulating.

The sound of the flute evokes the heat and fragility of Aomori's summer festivals.

Aomori has long winters and short hot summers, so people burn energy for festivals in the short summer. Aomori’s summer festivals are short, and because of this shortness, they have a lot of enthusiasm and a sense of transience. Matsuri-bayashi (festival music) is another essential element of festivals. For a limited time only, visitors can bathe in the hot spring while listening to the sound of the flute that plays the musical accompaniment that is also played at the actual Aomori Nebuta Festival, while thinking about the festival that has been passed down from generation to generation.

Iide Town, Yamagata Prefecture] “Submerged Forest of Lake Shirakawa,” a Mysterious Spring-Only Scene

The mysterious scenery of Lake Shirakawa in the town of Iide in southern Yamagata Prefecture can be seen only during two months in spring. In spring, a large amount of melt water flows into Lake Shirakawa from the Iide mountain range, one of Japan’s 100 most famous mountains, where there is heavy snowfall. When the lake is full of water, it creates a fantastic sight of white willow trees as if they are growing out of the water.

[Hoshinoya Tokyo] “New Year’s Kabuki Stay” brings the hospitality of an Edo Period theatrical teahouse to the present day.

Hoshinoya Tokyo, a Japanese-style inn located in Otemachi, Tokyo, will again this year host the “New Year Kabuki Stay” program, a two-day and one-night stay from January 5 to 26, 2024.
For people living in Edo, one of their New Year’s pleasures was to watch Kabuki, and it was a chic way to spend the New Year. Theatrical teahouses supported this way of enjoying Kabuki. In addition to arranging tickets to the theater, the teahouses delighted patrons by providing a complete range of services, including plot notes, tea, sweets, makunouchi box lunches, and snacks and drinks (*1). Hoshinoya Tokyo offers a stay to celebrate the New Year with hospitality similar to the theatrical teahouses of the time.

From November 22 (Wed) to December 3 (Sun), 2023, an autumn foliage lighting event will be held at Shinjuku Gyoen. Following the cherry blossom event this spring, Shinjuku Gyoen and Naked will collaborate again this fall for the autumn foliage event. Shinjuku Gyoen, one of Tokyo’s most famous gardens, is one of the few places in the city where visitors can enjoy the autumn leaves. The 200-meter-long rows of plane trees, the best maple tree spot in the city, Momijiyama, and the “Middle Pond,” with its spectacular reflection in the pond, will offer a world where the autumn leaves of Shinjuku Gyoen and Naked’s art and food are fused together.
